Whether or not George Lucas intends to re-release Star Wars films - in 3-D, as a box set, or with whatever technology we haven't yet heard of, what is certain is that the film series' popularity has not waned. Lucas has hinted that he will release home-video versions of several films, and speculation about other releases has only garnered more attention for Lucas, the Star Wars films, and the entire Star Wars industry.
As of 2007, the Star Wars pop culture phenomenon has generated revenue of approximately $20 billion - including the sales of books, comics, trading cards, video games, Star Wars costumes, and action figures. Last Halloween, Star Wars costumes were as abundant as they were in 1977 when the first film was released. Perhaps not surprisingly, Star Wars-themed costumes are among the most popular costumes for adults. The films' appeal to people of all ages may serve to explain how Lucas has manages to pull in so much from a seemingly limited venture.
