There was a time when having a phone in your home was a luxury. When it became the norm to have a phone, it was unusual to have more than one. Then it became rare that one would have more than one phone line. That and a lot more has changed since the cell phone was introduced. At first, cell phones were used sparingly because they didn’t have much battery life and phone calls were extremely expensive. However, as the industry grew, and more people started owning cell phone, the cell phone call rates dropped and many people started making the majority of their phone calls from their cell phones. This has left a situation where landlines are rarely used these days. My prediction is that they will be “extinct” very soon, or maybe just used in cases of emergencies.
